At the beginning of the year, the diesel vehicules represented almost half of the auto market
Keeping up the price for diesel above the one of the gasoline directed that the sales of cars on diesel to fall dramatically in the first nine months of the current year.
If at the end of last year, the weight of the diesel automobiles represented almost half of the total sales, after the first nine months it has dropped under 40 percentage. The main cause is represented by the fact that the price for diesel is bigger than the one for gasoline, and the initial investment in a diesel car, starting by 1.000 euro, is very difficult to be recovered.
The clincher in purchasing a car with diesel engine is, beyond fiability, the engine’s power or the life time, the fuel’s price. Given the fact that the diesel is more expensive than the gasoline, for the same distance covered the costs for those two types of motorization are similar, even if at the chapter consumption, the diesel type is more advantageous.
In December 2007, 48,1% of the total of sold vehicles in Romania, both local and imported, was represented by the diesel cars. Last year, the sales of the diesel cars recorded a significant growth comparative with the previous year, this being a tendency of the last years. So, if in 2005 the diesel sales represented only 22,8% of the total, in 2006 these represented 40,3%, and in 2007 about 44%. However, from the beginning of the current year, the diesel engine started to lose ground against the one on gasoline. In January, the diesel sales represented 47,4%, in February 44,2%, in March 41,7%, and in April only 40,2%. In May, the report between diesel and gasoline has already dropped under 40% - 39,3% to 60,7%. June and July were simply disastrous for the diesel types, the sales of the diesel cars dropping to about 32% out of the total of sales. August was a better month for diesel types, the sales for these categories growing up to 39,6%, but they dropped again in September, to 34,1%.
Making reference only to the imported automobiles, the sales of the diesel models have fallowed the same tendency, but with a lower devaluation. So, if in January, about 52% of the imported cars were with diesel engine, in September these have dropped up to 42%. June and July recorded the lowest results from this point of view, when the sales of diesel import cars represented only 37,3%, respective 36,3%.
Per total, in the first eight months of the current year, there were commercialized 222.997 vehicles, out of which 85.661 were cars with diesel engine. Out of these, 66.009 were represented by the imported models, and 19.652 were manufactured in the country –more precisely, the diesel models manufactured by Dacia.
The models equipped with diesel engines are more expensive than the ones on gasoline, the difference of price varying between a few hundreds and a few thousands of euro. In case of the first best-selling models on the Romanian market, the most requested models by the buyers remain the ones on gasoline, the main reason being given by the difference of price, which in the context of the current prices for gasoline and diesel, are being difficult of recovered. For instance, Dacia Logan the model Preference, 1.6 MPI engine on gasoline, 90 HP, is worth €7,500, VAT included, while the same type with diesel engine, 1.5 dCi, 85 HP (because there isn’t a diesel engine of 90 HP as in case of the one on gasoline) is worth €9.150. A difference of €1.650, which reported to the current prices for fuels and to the consumption of the car (7,3 litres/100 km in case of the engine on gasoline, respective 4,6 litres/100 km in case of the one on diesel) is recovered after 70.000 kilometers. In case of the model Skoda Octavia, the difference of price between the type on gasoline with engine of 1.6 liters and 102 HP and the one of 1.9 liters TDI and 101 HP is of €1,300. The difference of consumption is of two liters at one hundred kilometers, however, calculated at the price of fuels, the over price for the diesel model is recovered after covering 80.000 kilometers.
Kia Cee’d diesel seems to be a more advantageous model from this point of view. For example, the engine of 1.6 DSL, 90 HP, equipment City, is worth with €810 more than the type on gasoline 1.6 GSC 90 HP City, the difference being recovered after 60.000 kilometers. About after the same covered distance it is recovered the difference of €1.050 paid for an Opel Corsa diesel, equipment Enjoy, engine of 1.3 liters and 90 HP, against 1,4 liters 90 HP on gasoline (12.500 euro, against 11.450 euro).
These calculations were appreciated at a price for gasoline of 3,53 lei/liter (OMV Carrera 95) and at a price of 3,76 lei/liters in case of diesel (Top Euro Diesel 4, de la Petrom), ones of the cheapest types, calculated at a rate of exchange of 3,7 lei/euro.
